This is a very simple and healthy recipe that's great to make as a Saturday project with the kids. Put them to work peeling the apples and you can cut and core them, or let them run the old fashioned apple peeling machine if you have one (see photo at bottom of recipe).

Ingredients: 6 medium sized Granny Smith apples 3 medium sized Red Delicious apples Cinnamon to taste (optional)

Kitchen Tools: Large pot, knife and a vegetable peeler or apple peeling machine (see below)
Directions: Peel and core the apples, cut each into 6 to 8 pieces and put them into the pot. Cover and cook on medium-low heat. The apple will steam and begin to soften. Stir occasionally and make sure the bottom doesn’t scorch. The apples will release their natural juices as they simmer. Just stir and continue cooking until most of the liquid has evaporated. This will take about 45 to 60 minutes. Remove from the heat and stir with a spoon for a chunky texture. You can run the chunky sauce through a food mill for smoother sauce. Serve warm or cold, sprinkle on cinnamon if desired.
A small batch like this should be stored in the refrigerator. It makes for a quick addition to meals during the week. We usually make large batches of sauce and can them using a water bath canner. It can also be frozen for longer keeping.
